SEO & Pagination – What is Pagination?

August 27th, 2009 | Posted by janet b in SEO Factors

I have heard from many and most recently Stephan Spencer at the most recent SMX Advanced in Seattle talk of “pagination” What the hell is it anyway? Sounds pretty intelligent, just say the word, seriously …”Hey Frank, you have some serious pagination issues on that site” – you sound like a bloody genius!

Ok, I digress… Pagination can easily be described as a process for organizing content on web pages, i.e. the ugly (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8…)  From an SEO perspective, this is hideous and I don’t really think I need to explain why, do I? OK, then, no keywords? No way of showing a list, i.e. alphabetically, or chonologically, and in some cases providing a linear perspective isn’t very necessary – no matter the subject there should be a more organized way to approach this. How about having one main index page that could contain the groups of info in an easy to sort, logical way? This way each of your pages stands a better chance at getting viewed by visitors as well as reducing duplication.

From a user experience perspective, it can be downright confusing especially if you have a few hundred pages to go from 1-159 could be really monotonous.

I found a good, plain speaking site that helps describe this a bit further –  from David Hamill’s blog  and from reading blue acorn’s technical details – still think eliminating pagination all together and just stick to showing articles, or products, etc listed within neat categories – improve your indexation and avoid duplication!

Cheers!
